One of the world’s largest economies and a regional power in the Americas, Mexico is a newly industrialized country with a population of around 111m. Conquered by Spain in 1521, the country gained independence in 1821, and is Spanish-speaking. It became the first Latin American member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 1994.
