Ontološka podela oblasti na dve izdvojene kategorije (dihotomije) ili polariteta. "Binarizam" je opterećeniji termin koji kritika primenjuje na ono što ona smatra opsesivnim dualizmom strukturalista kao što su Levi-Štraus i Jakobson. Hjemslev je govorio protiv binarizma. Deridina dekonstrukcija pokazuje nemogućnost izbegavanja binarne logike.
