Company Profile:
An international scientific society that fosters the transfer of knowledge and practices to sustain global soils. Based in Madison, WI, and founded in 1936, SSSA is the professional home for 6,000+ members dedicated to advancing the field of soil science. It provides information about soils in ...
The maximum angle of slope (measured from a horizontal plane) at which loose, cohesionless material will come to rest.
Industry:Earth science
The process of entrapment of ammonium ions in interlayer spaces of phyllosilicates, in sites similar to K+ in micas. Smectites, illites and vermiculites all can fix ammonium, but vermiculite has the greatest capacity. The fixation may occur spontaneously in aqueous suspensions, or as a result of heating to remove interlayer water. Ammonium ions in collapsed interlayer spaces are exchangeable only after expansion of the interlayer.
Industry:Earth science
Soil with a pH value <7. 0.
Industry:Earth science
The branch of soil science that deals with the chemical constitution, chemical properties, and chemical reactions of soils.
Industry:Earth science
The amount of suspended or dissolved particles, or elements in a unit volume or unit mass as specified at a given temperature and pressure.
Industry:Earth science
The amount of liming material as calcium carbonate equivalent required to change a volume of soil to a specified state with respect to pH or soluble Al content.
Industry:Earth science
The breakdown of rock and mineral particles into smaller particles by physical forces such as frost action.
Industry:Earth science
Work required to move a unit positive charge from the bulk solution to a point at a known distance from clay platelet.
Industry:Earth science
The elevation at which water stands in a piezometer with respect to a point in question in the soil.
