Safety belts are the single most important factor in passive safety of vehicles. The most common occupant protection system today is the three-point safety belt, which holds the occupant in the seat and helps protect the body in the event of uncontrolled movements and forces. Supplementary systems, such as airbags, help with passive safety, but are no substitute for regular use of safety belts.
Note: Airbags are supplemental restraints only and will not deploy under all accident circumstances. Always use safety belts and seat children only in the rear, using restraint systems appropriate for their size and age.

Earlier accident studies have shown that a rigid steering column represents a special danger to the driver. Since the 1960s there have been various designs to reduce the risk of injury. Steering columns today have a joint so that they can yield in an impact; newer safety steering columns are able to "absorb" impact energy. A special case in point was the “procon-ten” system, which pulled the steering column and steering wheel forward, away from the driver.
Since the introduction of the airbag, the steering column’s job has become more complex. It has to supplement the protective potential of the safety belt and the airbag. Telescoping linkages and additional joints largely uncouple steering wheel movement from bulkhead deformation. If the impact does not exceed a certain severity, the steering wheel and the airbag remain in a defined position in front of the driver. An integrated sliding mechanism with a damping function reduces the loads on the chest and head to the extent technically feasible. These elements are a good supplement to the belt force limiters.

Drivers naturally connect with their Audi by the steering wheel and pedals, but the most personal contact comes from our technologically advanced seats. It is less a simple place to sit, and more a personalized connection to the vehicle. Nearly infinite adjustments can be made, from adjustability of the upper third of the backrest for better back support to variable lumbar support including a massage function.
With safety in mind, you will find electronically adjustable head restraints, electric belt height adjustors and crash-activated head restraints to prevent injuries to the neck. Intuitive controls are easily within reach and a unique memory system automatically changes every seat, wheel, and mirror adjustment based on which key the driver is using. Different drivers can share the same car and never have to make a single adjustment. Your connection to you vehicle has never been more natural.

Many Audi models allow drivers and passengers to electrically adjust the seat’s fore/aft position and height, lumbar support, angle of seat cushion and seat back, and outside mirror settings. Additionally, some models allow for adjustment of head restraint height, safety belt height, and steering wheel position. Individual settings can be stored for four drivers and recalled at the touch of a button. As soon as the car is unlocked with the remote control, the memory activates the seat, mirror and steering wheel settings associated with the particular key that is being used.

In this seating configuration, part or all of the rear seat can be independently positioned and adjusted to provide additional trunk space. When unfolded, it also provides room for three people.

Servotronic is speed-dependent power steering in which the amount of servo assist provided is dictated by road speed. Thus it provides even more comfort and convenience for the driver. The amount of power assist is greatest at low speeds - when parking the car for example - making it easier to maneuver the car. At higher speeds, an electronic sensing system gradually reduces the level of power assist. In this way, the driver can control the car even more precisely than with conventional power steering.

Sideguard head-protection airbags cover the side window area. When combined with properly worn three-point safety belts, the Sideguard head airbag system is an effective supplement for protecting the head area of front and rear vehicle occupants in certain types of impacts. Together with other passive safety design measures, Sideguard can provide additional side impact protection. Sideguard can also help protect against debris intrusion.
Note: Airbags are supplemental restraints only and will not deploy under all accident circumstances. Always use safety belts and seat children only in the rear, using restraint systems appropriate for their size and age.

SiriusXM satellite radio offers over 130 channels of commercial-free music, plus sports, news, talk and entertainment. All Audi vehicles come standard with SiriusXM satellite radio and a 3-month trial subscription to the Sirius Select package and some models offer a 3-month trial subscription to SiriusXM Traffic as an option with the available MMI navigation system.

Even in very low sunlight, light-sensitive elements under the glass sunroof panel produce electricity to power the ventilator inside the vehicle. Even when the ignition is switched off, the interior will be supplied with a continuous flow of fresh air and temperature levels inside the vehicle can be reduced by as much as 50% with the outside air that is cleaned as is passes through the dust and pollen filter. This kind of ventilation does not put any additional demands on the car’s battery. This preliminary cooling lets the air conditioner cool the interior to the desired temperature with little energy and use of the ventilator.

The latest generation common rail system has one high-pressure pump and one rail per cylinder bank. The maximum injection pressure is 1,600 bar, 250 bar more than previous common rail systems. When piezo injectors are used for injection, a voltage is applied to ceramic, which changes its crystal structures. The result is a minimal geometric change, which mechanically triggers the opening of the injector needle. The use of piezo injectors makes it possible to reduce the moving mass at the injector needle from 16 to 4 grams in each case. This enables considerably smaller and more precisely metered injection quantities. At the same time, piezo technology allows a higher injector needle speed.
The number of injection processes per combustion cycles can thus be varied almost at will. The 3.0 V6 TDI engine, for example, has up to five injection processes: in addition to the main injection process, double pilot injection takes place at the lower end of the speed range and single pilot injection in the medium speed range. On top of this, single post-injection takes place up to around 2,500 rpm and at maximum part-load. This reduces emissions and ensures a smoother combustion process.
