(1) That point, in a coordinate system, which has defined coordinates and not coordinates determined by measurement. This point is usually given the coordinates (0,0) in a coordinate system in the plane and (0,0,0) in a coordinate system in space. In surveying, when a plane rectangular coordinate system is used, the coordinates of the origin are often given large, positive values. These values are called false easting (or false westing) and false northing (or false southing). (2) The point to which the coordinates (0,0,0,....0) are assigned, regardless of the location of that point with respect to the axes of the coordinate system. (3) The point from which coordinates of other points in the coordinate system are reckoned.

An equal-area map-projection mapping a rotational spheroid onto a cylinder in such a way that there is a constant ratio between the area of a region on the ellipsoid and the area of the corre-sponding region on the cylinder. When the surface is mapped onto a cylinder tangent at the equator, the map projection used is often referred to as Lambert's cylindrical equal area map projection. Among other cylindrical, equal area map projections are the modified Plate Carrée map projection (the Plate Carrée itself is not an equal area map projection), and transverse or oblique aspects of it.

A prefix meaning the point closest to. It is usually placed before the name of the body or point the point is closest to. For example, perigee is that point, of an orbit, closest to the Earth's center of mass; perihelion is that point, of an orbit, closest to the Sun. Note that if a satellite has appreciable mass compared to the mass of the primary body, the center of mass of the two-body system is meant, e.g., lunar perigee refers to that point, in the Moon's orbit, closest to the center of mass of the Earth and Moon together.
