A formula for the volume of a prismoid. A typical formula, used for calculating the volume of a cut or fill shaped like a prismoid, is V = L (A + 4B + C)/6, in which V is the volume, A and C are the cross sectional areas of the ends, B is the cross sectional area at the middle of the cut or fill, and L is the length of a uniformly tapering part of the cut or fill. The formula is used, for example, in grading the routes of railroads or highways.
