Industry:Earth science
(1) One of a pair of coordinates in a two dimensional coordinate system lying on a level surface such as the geoid. (2) One of a pair of coordinates in a coordinate system lying on an ellipsoid taken to represent the Earth's surface. (3) One of a pair of coordinates in a horizontal plane. (4) One of the two coordinates azimuth and zenith distance (or angular elevation) in a horizontal coordinate system (astronomy).
Industry:Earth science
A depth (distance) obtained in digital form as the direct output from an echo sounder.
Industry:Earth science
The space between successive ties of a railroad.
Industry:Earth science
A tidal constituent which represents the diurnal effect of the Moon's declination on the tides. Its period is 25. 82 hours and its angular speed is 13. 9430 degrees per hour. The Doodson number is 145. 555.
Industry:Earth science
(1) A small stream, often intermittent, or the bed of such a stream when dry. (2) The valley, gulch or wash of an intermittent stream, often of considerable extent. (3) A small valley or a low-lying region.
Industry:Earth science
A corner at the extremity of a boundary of a quarter section, midway between or 40 chains from the controlling section corners, depending on location within the township.
Industry:Earth science
The change made in the scale of a picture in one direction, while leaving the scale in the other direction unchanged; this corrects for differences in scale introduced when the original picture was taken. The correction is usually made by an optical system interposed between the original picture (film) and the projected image. It may be used, for example, to aid photo interpretation by providing some correction for tilt of the camera or for systematic differences of elevation in the ground.
Industry:Earth science
A contour line drawn between those contour lines which are labeled with the elevation. Depending on the contour interval, there are three or four intermediate contour lines between the labeled contour lines. Sometimes incorrectly called an intermediate contour.
Industry:Earth science
An equatorial coordinate system (1) which has the plane of the equator and the plane of the local meridian as its geometric elements. A point in both planes is specified as the center to which directions are referred. The coordinates of a celestial body are the angle (called the hour angle) from the plane of the local meridian to a plane perpendicular to the equatorial plane and passing through the celestial body and the center, and the angle from the equatorial plane to the line from the center to the body. The hour angle is accounted positive when measured in a clockwise direction.
